THE HEALING CLEANSING CURRENT (558 words)

One of the great spiritual experience of life is feeling a spiritual current run through you, cleansing you through and through. Whatever brings on this current for you is priceless. We need to pay attention and be aware of what it is that brings this experience to us.
Yet we need to be aware that it is a direct experience of God and this means it is not robotic and totally predictable. God is a God of surprises. We will often find this “current running through us” in the most mundane situations.
One reason people love sports so much is that sports thrills provide something similar to this current running through us.” Our strong attraction to sports is really a symptom of our ”homesickness for God.”
I do not say this to make you ashamed of your love for sports. I just think we should become more aware of our needs and motivations. We should enjoy sports if we wish but be aware that it is only a type or symbol of the deep satisfactions that the presence of God brings.
It has always amused me that people think it is perfectly normal to scream and shout and turn flips at a ball game but think those who rejoice while singing hymns or worshipping God are weird. Which is most natural? I say the experience of the presence of God and the celebration of great spiritual truths is the most natural thing on the planet. We are celebrating coming home. We are forever coming home to God, our Eternal Source.
Either Jesus meant it when He said He would be with us always or He was just holding out a silly hope. I have never thought of Him as a liar or one who would play with human aspirations. So if he meant what He said, He is forever with us to fellowship and celebrate life’s little and big moments.
Al Harvey once told me, “The reason I love Jesus is that He gave God a face.” He is so much more accessible than Jehovah of the Old Testament. Talk with Him and you will see he is right there with you. Commune with Him and the current will flow through you more often. He is very precious and very real.
I have often spoken of my experiences of God in my “honeysuckle cathedral” in our backyard. I was a small child when I grew to love these experiences of a ”current running through me.” It set a pattern for my spiritual life. From that moment no pope or preacher could limit my experiences to their theology and the “approved rituals” of any church. Unless your theology or rituals make God real to you, they are of little value.
When I hear Don Gibson sing, “Then I Met the Master,” I feel the current run though me. One reason the Gaither homecoming are so successful is they bring us home to God in the songs they sing. When I sit with a dear friend and we talk about the Lord and our enjoyment of Him, I feel the current.
I note all these things that send the current through me, but I always expect God to use the burning bushes and the still small voices to speak peace and joy to me. I will forever love God’s surprises.
